EBRAINS welcomes Ghent University as new associate member

The membership went into effect on 1 September 2022. It will give Ghent University the opportunity to co-design future iterations of EBRAINS’ cutting-edge tools and services. These state-of-the-art capabilities – which cover data sharing, atlasing, modelling, simulation, high-performance computing, and neurorobotics – aim to help European researchers to address major challenges in brain health, benefiting from insights into data science, brain organization, and artificial intelligence gathered from the EU Flagship Human Brain Project.

Ghent University is a world-class, open, pluralistic and socially engaged university. The university is over 200 years old, offers more than 200 programmes and conducts research in many scientific disciplines.

Their credo is 'Dare to Think': they are a haven for courageous thinkers. 50,000 students and 15,000 employees constantly enter into dialogue with society. Ghent University encourages each of them to seek personal growth and rewards its students and staff for what they set in motion.

With one of the most progressive career models for academics in the world, Ghent University evaluates its scholars not only by the length of their publication list but also by the impact they pursue, what they achieve and how they collaborate. High-risk and interdisciplinary research are key. UGent’ers make science better and through that science, they also make the world better. Boldness, curiosity, experimentation, change of perspective, responsibility, daring to fail and the awareness of not knowing are more important than their (otherwise excellent...) position in the rankings.

From the bustling city of Ghent, Ghent University looks the whole world straight in the eye. Various disciplines such as biotechnology, aquaculture, microelectronics, history and veterinary medicine are internationally renowned. The university is constantly expanding its horizons, by collaborating with the best universities in Belgium and abroad. They’re proud to say they are the first European university in South Korea, with Ghent University Global Campus.

"The data and models spanning species, temporal and spatial scales, and pathophysiological conditions hosted on EBRAINS offer unprecedented opportunities for researchers. The platform incarnates and promotes the kind of interdisciplinarity that is key for advancing neuroscience in the upcoming decades. I am confident that several colleagues at Ghent University will benefit from this engagement and will find in EBRAINS and its Belgian node a catalyzer for collaborations and new projects."

Daniele Marinazzo
Professor of Neuroimaging Data Analysis at Ghent University

"We are very happy to welcome Ghent University as a member of EBRAINS. The university boasts excellence in a range of neuroscience approaches, including computational research and study of the dynamical networks subserving function. It is also at the forefront of recent advances in neurology, with its Center for Neurophysiological Monitoring specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with sleep disorders or epilepsy. The membership will allow us to continue the collaboration fostered in the Human Brain Project, during which Ghent University contributed to the integration of The Virtual Brain, a simulation platform which is now available on EBRAINS.”

CEO of EBRAINS

About EBRAINS

EBRAINS is a new digital research infrastructure (RI), created by the EU-funded Human Brain Project (HBP), to foster brain-related research and to help translate the latest scientific discoveries into innovation in medicine and industry, for the benefit of patients and society.

It draws on cutting-edge neuroscience and offers an extensive range of brain data sets, atlasesmodelling and simulation tools, easy access to high-performance computing resources and to robotics and neuromorphic platforms.

All academic researchers have open access to EBRAINS’ state-of-the art services. Industry researchers are also very welcome to use the platform under specific agreements. For more information about EBRAINS, please contact us at info@ebrains.eu or visit https://ebrains.eu/

About the Human Brain Project

The Human Brain Project (HBP) is the largest brain science project in Europe and stands among the biggest research projects ever funded by the European Union. It is one of the three FET Flagship Projects of the EU. At the interface of neuroscience and information technology, the HBP investigates the brain and its diseases with the help of highly advanced methods from computing, neuroinformatics and artificial intelligence and drives innovation in fields like brain-inspired computing and neurorobotics.
