EBRAINS welcomes Medical University of Varna as new associate member

Medical University of Varna

The membership will give the Medical University of Varna the opportunity to co-design future iterations of EBRAINS’ cutting-edge tools and services. These state-of-the-art capabilities - which include an extensive range of brain data sets, a multilevel brain atlas, modelling and simulation tools, and access to high-performance computing resources and robotics and neuromorphic platforms - aim to help European researchers to address major challenges in brain health.

The Medical University "Prof. Dr. Paraskev Stoyanov" - Varna was established in 1961. MU - Varna trains specialists in the fields of medicine, pharmacy, public health and health care and is the leading medical University in Bulgaria according to the independent global information search engine for higher education EduRank, based on scientific research achievements, reputation and influence of the university alumni. About 8,000 students, doctoral students and specialists, of which nearly 2,000 are foreign citizens from above 50 countries, study at the Varna Medical University in Bulgarian or English language programs.

MU - Varna has its own research institute (RIMUV), whose researchers work in the following main areas: "Neurosciences", "Oncology and rare diseases", "Stem cell biology and transplantology", "Nutrition and quality of life", "Implantation medicine and genetics" and "Public Health and Disease Management". For more information about MU-Varna, please write to rimuv@mu-varna.bg or visit https://www.mu-varna.bg/EN.

"We are very pleased that the sharing of data of our gene expression brain atlas www.monkey-niche.org with EBRAINS has now opened a door for a larger collaboration with EBRAINS. We are very much looking forward to being able to deepen the interaction with EBRAINS and its world-class tools, platforms and data sets."

Prof. Dr. Anton Tonchev
Director, Research Institute of MU-Varna, who has initiated the collaboration between MU-Varna and EBRAINS

"Joining EBRAINS will give MU-Varna the opportunity to facilitate integration of its researchers working not only in the field of neurosciences, but also in areas such as rare diseases or oncology, with the scientists from a leading European infrastructure. We are proud to support and convinced that the Associate Membership at EBRAINS will expand the capacity of MU - Varna researchers in forming international networks at European and world-wide level."

Prof. Dr. Violeta Iotova
Vice-Rector for Research at MU-Varna

“We are very pleased to welcome the Medical University of Varna as an associate member at EBRAINS. The university boasts a strong background in neuroscience research, as well as expertise in early diagnostics and treatment of various neurological diseases.”

About EBRAINS

The EBRAINS research infrastructure, a key outcome and legacy of the EU-funded Human Brain Project (HBP), was officially launched in 2019. Two years later, in 2021, EBRAINS was included in the Roadmap of the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI). In this next phase, after the recent conclusion of the HBP, EBRAINS will complete the transition into a sustainable infrastructure.

EBRAINS is an open research infrastructure that gathers high-quality research data, tools and computing facilities for brain-related research, built with interoperability at the core. The infrastructure offers an extensive range of FAIR data sets, a most comprehensive multilevel brain atlas, AI-based tools for analysis, modelling and simulation tools, and access to high-performance computing resources, robotics and neuromorphic platforms to researchers.
