EBRAINS welcomes Vrije Universiteit Brussel as new associate member

The membership went into effect on 1 July 2022. It will give VUB the opportunity to co-design future iterations of EBRAINS’ cutting-edge tools and services. These state-of-the-art capabilities – which cover data sharing, atlasing, modelling, simulation, high-performance computing, and neurorobotics – aim to help European researchers to address major challenges in brain health, benefiting from insights into data science, brain organization, and artificial intelligence gathered from the EU Flagship Human Brain Project.

Vrije Universiteit Brussel is an internationally oriented urban engaged university in Brussels, the heart of Europe. By providing excellent research and education on a human scale, VUB wants to make an active and committed contribution to a better society.

“Joining EBRAINS was a logical next step to strengthen the neuroscience research at VUB”, says vice-rector for research Prof. Karin Vanderkerken. We already have a vibrant neuroscience community at our university: VUB researchers who are experts in clinical neurology, neuroimaging, neurophysiology, neurochemistry, machine learning supported modelling and human-centered robotics are linked to the VUB Center for Neurosciences. Joining EBRAINS will strengthen the collaboration and sharing of data within the university and beyond even more.”

“I am delighted to welcome the Vrije Universiteit Brussel as a new member. The VUB brings in several research groups with extensive expertise in clinical neurology, neuroimaging, neurophysiology, neurochemistry, machine learning supported modelling and human-centered robotics, linked to the VUB Center for Neurosciences (C4N). These groups have an extensive spin-off involvement and strong links with clinical application, including in the departments of neurology, psychiatry, neurosurgery and radiology of the University Hospital of Brussels (UZ Brussel). In addition, the VUB strongly supports AI for the common good, which necessitates FAIR data access. VUB’s membership is a step towards further formal integration of the institutions forming the EBRAINS Belgium Consortium."

About the Human Brain Project

The Human Brain Project (HBP) is the largest brain science project in Europe and stands among the biggest research projects ever funded by the European Union. It is one of the three FET Flagship Projects of the EU. At the interface of neuroscience and information technology, the HBP investigates the brain and its diseases with the help of highly advanced methods from computing, neuroinformatics and artificial intelligence and drives innovation in fields like brain-inspired computing and neurorobotics.
