EBRAINS welcomes Athena Research Centre as new associate member

Athena RC Logo

The membership went into effect on 1 January 2023. It will give Athena RC the opportunity to co-design future iterations of EBRAINS’ cutting-edge tools and services. These state-of-the-art capabilities – which cover data sharing, atlasing, modelling, simulation, high-performance computing, and neurorobotics – aim to help European researchers to address major challenges in brain health, benefiting from insights into data science, brain organization, and artificial intelligence gathered from the EU Flagship Human Brain Project.

The Athena Research and Innovation Center in Information, Communication and Knowledge Technologies (Athena RC) was founded in 2003 in three cities, Athens, Patras and Xanthi. It is the only research center in Greece that is exclusively focused on Digital Sciences and Technologies. Its structure includes three Institutes, on Language and Speech Processing, Industrial Systems, and Information Management Systems, respectively, and eight Units, on Technology Clusters, Space Programs, Robotics, Environmental and Networking Technologies and Applications, Pharma-Informatics, Sustainable Development, Artificial Intelligence-Data Science-Algorithms, and Women’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship, respectively. The vision of Athena RC is to conduct outstanding research in Information and Communication Technologies, pursuing solutions to global challenges, addressing local needs, and producing novel and deep technological results with a broad impact on other sciences, industry, and society at large.

Athena RC is excited to join EBRAINS. Athena RC integration into EBRAINS brings valuable expertise in infrastructures and the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). By leveraging its experience, Athena RC will contribute to the technical coordination, architecture design, and provision of integral core platform services within the EBRAINS initiative. At the same time, our even closer collaboration with the EBRAINS community will allow Athena RC to gain insights and experience while tackling new challenges.

Prof. Ioannis Emiris
President of the Athena Research Center

We're delighted to welcome Athena Research & Innovation Center as an associate member at EBRAINS. The center brings with it a wealth of experience in the development and operation of research infrastructures. During the Human Brain Project, Athena RC played an essential role in the software architecture development for EBRAINS, and was also a key contributor to the development of core platform services and the Medical Informatics Platform.

About EBRAINS

EBRAINS is a new digital research infrastructure (RI), created by the EU-funded Human Brain Project (HBP), to foster brain-related research and to help translate the latest scientific discoveries into innovation in medicine and industry, for the benefit of patients and society.

It draws on cutting-edge neuroscience and offers an extensive range of brain data sets, atlasesmodelling and simulation tools, easy access to high-performance computing resources and to robotics and neuromorphic platforms.

All academic researchers have open access to EBRAINS’ state-of-the art services. Industry researchers are also very welcome to use the platform under specific agreements. For more information about EBRAINS, please contact us at info@ebrains.eu or visit https://ebrains.eu/

EBRAINS is listed on the ESFRI roadmap

About the Human Brain Project

The Human Brain Project (HBP) is the largest brain science project in Europe and stands among the biggest research projects ever funded by the European Union. It is one of the three FET Flagship Projects of the EU. At the interface of neuroscience and information technology, the HBP investigates the brain and its diseases with the help of highly advanced methods from computing, neuroinformatics and artificial intelligence and drives innovation in fields like brain-inspired computing and neurorobotics.
