Nencki–Monash (NM) Marmoset Brain Template

The Marmoset@EBRAINS brain atlas, based on the Nencki-Monash (NM) atlas (Majka et al. 2020), is a comprehensive, open-access 3D resource designed to help you navigate the common marmoset brain with high precision. Unlike traditional atlases based on a single subject, this reference represents a morphological average of 20 young adult marmosets.

Marmoset atlas

By combining histology with the spatial consistency of MRI, the atlas serves as a bridge for researchers. It allows one to integrate diverse data types into a single, unified reference space.

  • Built from the 3D reconstruction of Nissl-stained serial sections from 20 individuals, ensuring the template reflects the "average" brain structure rather than the characteristics of a single animal.
  • Helps to understand individual differences with maps that show the probability of locating specific cytoarchitectural areas and borders across the population.
  • Provides quantitative data on laminar structure (layers) that is often lost in standard MRI templates.
  • Includes spatial transformations to easily map data between the NM template and other popular marmoset brain atlases.

The template is available in Siibra explorer or for offline download and is compatible with standard neuroimaging software. It provides the essential coordinate framework for aligning your experimental data with established anatomical knowledge.

Nencki-Monash Template: Average Template of the Marmoset Cortex (v1)

The Nencki–Monash (NM) template v1.0 (2020) represents a computational morphological average of 20 gender-balanced young adult brains of the common marmoset monkey (Callithrix jacchus), derived from 3D reconstructions based on Nissl-stained serial sections. The dataset includes a Nissl-like color anatomical reference rendered at 50 µm isotropic resolution, estimates of cortical thickness, and spatial transformations between the NM template and other selected templates of the marmoset brain to enhance interoperability.

Probabilistic Localization of Cytoarchitectural Areas of the Nencki-Monash Average Template of the Marmoset Cortex (v1)

This document describes the probabilistic parcellation of cytoarchitectural cortical areas of the Nencki–Monash (NM) template (Majka et al., 2025). The NM template represents a computational morphological average of twenty gender-balanced young adult brains of the common marmoset monkey (Callithrix jacchus), derived from 3D reconstructions based on Nissl-stained serial sections.
