Introduction

Access to medical data is key to helping patients and harnessing the power of AI for clinical progress. At the same time, work with patient data poses special challenges due to the sensitive nature of this data. EBRAINS makes sensitive data discoverable through anonymous metadata in the EBRAINS Knowledge Graph and provides scientists with privacy-compliant tools to access, analyse and share medical brain data securely and ethically. Researchers and clinicians can work with advanced neuroimaging, cognitive and clinical datasets using AI-powered pipelines and modelling tools. Our services support research in early diagnosis, personalised treatment and neurorehabilitation of neurological and psychiatric disorders.

Health Research Platforms

EBRAINS provides GDPR-compliant tools to access medical brain data and is involved in TEF-Health and eBRAIN-Health research projects. TEF-Health aims to personalise treatments for neurodegenerative diseases using machine learning, while eBRAIN-Health integrates multi-modal brain data to identify new biomarkers and therapeutic targets. These services are being further developed in the framework of the EBRAINS 2.0 project.

Platforms

Health Data Cloud (HDC)

The HealthDataCloud aims to provide EBRAINS services for sensitive data. The foundation for the EBRAINS HealthDataCloud is an existing GDPR compliant and EBRAINS interoperable Virtual Research Environment (VRE) – located at the Charité – that provides a secure and scalable data platform enabling multi-institutional research teams to store, share and analyze complex multi-modal health datasets.

Human Intracerebral EEG Platform (HIP)

The Human Intracerebral EEG Platform (HIP) is an open-source platform designed for collecting, managing, analyzing, and sharing iEEG data at an international level. Its primary mission is to promote the development of large-scale iEEG research projects by facilitating international collaborations in the field.

Medical Informatics Platform (MIP)

The Medical Informatics Platform (MIP) is designed to help clinicians, clinical scientists, and clinical data scientists aiming to adopt advanced analytics for clinical research. Users can explore harmonized medical data extracted from pre-processed neuroimaging, neurophysiological and medical records and research cohort datasets without transferring original clinical data.

Platform for Human Imaging (PHI)

The PHI includes structural, functional, and diffusion MRI, PET, cognitive assessments and clinical records. It offers secure, standardised tools for collecting and analysing medical brain data across centres. PHI supports large-scale studies and international collaborations, making it easier for scientists to compare results, improve diagnostics and accelerate clinical research.

EBRAINS provides a broad collection of brain health data and tools to work with it, as well as the possibility for researchers to store and share their health data sets in a fully compliant way.

Health Data Cloud (HDC) fully operational and GDPR-audited Virtual Research Environment (VRE), developed by Charité, serves EBRAINS users in a certified critical infrastructure.

Virtual Research Environment

A minimum viable product of the Health Data Cloud (HDC) is available for user testing at CSCS, the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre.
