Human Intracerebral EEG Platform (HIP)

The HIP is an open-source platform dedicated to the collection, curation, sharing, and analysis of human intracerebral EEG (iEEG) data at international scale. Developed within the Human Brain Project and operational since 2022, it connects hospitals and research centers working on some of the rarest and most valuable data in neuroscience: recordings collected directly from the human brain.

Why it matters for iEEG research

Intracerebral EEG recordings are acquired from patients with drug-resistant epilepsy undergoing pre-surgical evaluation. This data is scattered across clinical centers that each use different formats, storage systems, and governance policies. Bringing it together for large-scale research requires institutional agreements, coordinated data handling across sites, and a shared analytical environment that works consistently for all contributors.

The HIP addresses this directly. It provides:

  • A browser-based environment for accessing, curating, and analyzing iEEG data, with no local installation required
  • Pre-integrated neuroscience tools, including AnyWave, Brainstorm, IntrAnat, GARDEL, FreeSurfer, FSL, MRtrix3, The Virtual Brain, MNE-Python, MATLAB, BIDS Manager, and more
  • Automated BIDS-iEEG data management, standardizing datasets across contributing centers
  • Three workspace types, Personal (private analysis), Group (institutional projects), and Collaborative (shared multi-center projects) to support individual, joint, and institutional workflows
  • Role-based access control and auditable workflows, with data controllers retaining full authority over access decisions at all times

By bringing data, tools, and governance into a single environment, the HIP enables multi-center iEEG research under consistent conditions across all contributing sites.

Evolution: the HIP powered by CHORUS

The HIP is evolving. It is now being re-built on CHORUS, an open-source Trusted Research Environment for sensitive biomedical data. This evolution is transparent to users: all existing functionalities are preserved, including workspaces, tools, and data management pipelines HIP users are familiar with. What changes is the underlying infrastructure.

CHORUS adds a Kubernetes-based fully scalable secure architecture designed for sensitive biomedical data. This evolution strengthens the platform's security model, supports future integration with emerging regulatory frameworks such as the European Health Data Space, and positions the HIP to connect with high-performance computing resources for large-scale analyses, including the development and use of AI models trained on multimodal brain data.

For existing HIP users, ongoing work on the current production platform will not be disrupted. Once the CHORUS-powered HIP goes live, users will be transitioned to the new platform with their consent. New users will benefit from the same neuroscience-specific capabilities on a more scalable foundation.

Automated SEEG Imaging Pipeline

CiCLONE streamlines the entire SEEG imaging process, from multimodal co-registration to precise electrode localization, into a single automated pipeline, delivering fast, reproducible, and reliable results. By reducing processing time from days to hours while improving accuracy and standardization, it enables users to focus on interpretation and decision-making rather than technical complexity.
