Human Brain Project

The Human Brain Project (HBP) was a long-term and large-scale research initiative that pioneered digital brain research.

To facilitate the integration of brain science across disciplines and national borders, the Human Brain Project built the digital research infrastructure EBRAINS.

EBRAINS AISBL was the coordinator of the Human Brain Project from 2021 to 2023.

The HBP contributed to a deeper understanding of the complex structure and function of the human brain with a unique interdisciplinary approach at the interface of neuroscience and technology. The project brought together neuroscientists, engineers, physicists, statisticians, computer scientists, but also researchers from the wider life sciences and ethics experts, to enhance the understanding of the human brain.

HBP scientists employed highly advanced methods from computing, neuroinformatics and artificial intelligence to carry out cutting-edge brain research. The acquired knowledge has been translated into novel applications in medicine and technological advances. Researchers of the HBP also addressed the social and ethical implications arising from brain research and its applications.
