EBRAINS endorses European Charter for the Responsible Development of Neurotechnologies

European Charter for the Responsible Development of Neurotechnologies

EBRAINS has endorsed the European Charter for the Responsible Development of Neurotechnologies, launched by the European Brain Council (EBC) in April.

As a research infrastructure that supports the development of neurotechnologies, EBRAINS is committed to following the best practices and engaging with relevant policy actions in this field. This initiative aims to ensure that emerging neurotechnologies – ranging from clinical tools for diagnosing and treating neurological conditions, to applications in the general consumer market, for example for work, education, and entertainment – are developed and used in ways that are ethical, safe, and aligned with societal values.

As neurotechnologies become increasingly integrated into both medical practice and everyday life, the Charter highlights the importance of protecting neural data, preventing misuse, and promoting trust, wellbeing, and responsible innovation. By supporting this Charter, EBRAINS joins a community of stakeholders committed to guiding public policy and private sector activity in line with responsible innovation, fundamental rights protection, and promotion of public trust.

The Charter complements existing EU consumer protection and product safety frameworks and contributes to shaping a sustainable and inclusive future for neurotechnology development.
