EBRAINS invited to join EOSC Federation as a thematic Node to advance Open Science

On 21 April 2026 in Nicosia, the EOSC Tripartite Governance endorsed 14 second-wave candidate EOSC Nodes and invited them to join the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) Federation over the next 12 months, marking a new phase of strategic growth for Europe’s federated research data ecosystem.

Among them, the EBRAINS Research Infrastructure was formally included as a thematic EOSC Node, contributing neuroscience data, tools and digital services to the EOSC Federation.

Recognised as the Common European Data Space for Research and Innovation, the EOSC Federation aims to build a trusted, interoperable and federated European ecosystem, connecting research data and scientific services across disciplines and borders.

The endorsement was formally announced during the 9th EOSC Tripartite Event, hosted by the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union at the University of Cyprus.

EBRAINS' inclusion highlights the growing role of domain-specific research infrastructures in strengthening Europe's open science landscape. Together with METROFOOD-RI and ENVRI  -  the other newly endorsed thematic Nodes - EBRAINS will contribute to expanding the thematic diversity, geographic reach and cross-domain interoperability of the EOSC Federation.

The expansion is expected to enable new cross-infrastructure use cases and broader access to interoperable research resources - reinforcing EOSC’s role as a cornerstone of the European Research Area.

The enrolment process for the new candidate EOSC Nodes will begin in May 2026 and continue in sequenced phases through spring 2027.
