EBRAINS Publishes Report on Landscape Survey on Needs in Neuroscience Education

The EBRAINS Education Team and Education Task Force have released their report on the Landscape Survey on Needs in Neuroscience Education, offering new insights into the evolving demands of digital neuroscience education.

The survey gathered 315 responses from educators, trainees and tool developers across 28 countries in Europe, North America and Africa, capturing perspectives on teaching, learning, and tool development in the field.

Findings highlight a clear digital skills gap. Educators report that early-career researchers most often lack skills in programming (53%), data analysis/statistics (52%), and interdisciplinary knowledge (50%). Key barriers to advancing digital and interdisciplinary neuroscience education include limited staffing (53%) and funding (45%), while digital tools are not always easily adaptable for educational use. Notably, 76% of tool developers require targeted financial support to integrate tools into academic programmes, and 62% of educators seek self-directed learning materials, such as step-by-step guides, to support tool adoption in education.

The report recommends expanding digital training delivery, strengthening programming and data science skills development through interdisciplinary approaches, and increasing targeted support for both tool developers and educators. It also highlights the importance of raising awareness of EBRAINS and extending its reach within and beyond Europe.
