New Framework Bridges the Gap Between Neuroscience Research Tools and the Classroom
The Neuroscience Education Readiness Checklist (NERC) is a novel, 25-item self-assessment framework designed specifically for the creators of neuroscience tools and training resources.
By evaluating domain-specificity, pedagogical utility, and infrastructure requirements, NERC reduces the administrative burden on faculty members while providing actionable, structured feedback to tool developers.

As the first methodological framework of its kind, NERC provides a structured self-assessment with actionable criteria organized across three overarching domains. These encompass General Items and Accessibility, which evaluates equity, cost, and target group alignment; Instructor Usability and Workflow, which addresses setup complexity, documentation, and assessment support; and Technical Readiness, which examines installation, data privacy, and hardware scalability.
Co-created through iterative co-design workshops with the EBRAINS 2.0 Education Task Force, INCF, and GA4GH, NERC was built directly alongside digital tool developers. This collaborative approach ensures that emerging digital neuroscience tools are not only scientifically rigorous but also readily education-adoptable and scalable.
Following its initial development, the checklist underwent a successful real-world validation trial at the EBRAINS Conference on Community Involvement, Education, Innovation, and Interoperability in Florence on June 25, 2026 (pictured). While current efforts establish NERC's initial design framework, future validation will evaluate its inter-rater reliability and predictive validity against long-term adoption outcomes. Ultimately, NERC aims to foster a more equitable educational ecosystem, ensuring that the next generation of scientists can seamlessly transition from advanced digitally-supported neuroscientific methods to breakthrough discoveries
