EBRAINS User Stories: Nataliia Melnyk

In this first story, we meet Nataliia Melnyk, who uses EBRAINS resources in her teaching and neuropsychology research.

Nataliia Melnyk is a professor of the Psychology Department at the Ukraine Sigmund Freud University in Kyiv, where she teaches neuropsychology of trauma and brain injury in children and adults. Since 1996 she has been investigating structural changes caused by the destruction of nerve fibres, as well as changes in the nervous system under conditions of demyelination and remyelination. In 2023, she joined the EBRAINS Community Summer School, a two-day meeting which took place in Copenhagen, Denmark. At the School, together with Cristina Martinez Gonzalez from the University of Edinburgh, she organised the subcommunity “Microscopy and Histology” on the EBRAINS Community Space.

How do you use EBRAINS for your research about nerve fibers?

The Microscopy and Histology subcommunity, which I manage, is dedicated to sharing histology protocols, tips for tissue processing, and discussing types of microscopes suitable for experimental needs, in order to obtain the best possible neuroscience images. I use these resources in my investigation. Additionally, I use the atlases available on the EBRAINS platform. They both help me in my research.

Are there specific tools that you use and what sort of tool or workflow do you think would make a useful addition to EBRAINS?

Various protocols and other resources, which I also include in my presentation during lectures. Similarly, I think information for students such as lectures from EBRAINS researchers or great scientists would make a great addition to the digital platform.

Do you collaborate with other researchers outside of your country/institutions thanks to EBRAINS?

Not yet, but I hope to in the future!

Join the EBRAINS Community Space - a platform for connecting, sharing insights, and staying updated on neuroscience developments.
