Interview with EBRAINS CSO Viktor Jirsa: “The EBRAINS Roadmap is a shared vision and implementation plan for the next decade of neuroscience in Europe”
In this interview, EBRAINS Chief Science Officer Viktor Jirsa answers common questions about the EBRAINS 10-Year Roadmap, and invites you to contribute.
What is the EBRAINS 10-Year Roadmap?
The Roadmap is a shared vision and implementation plan for the next decade of neuroscience in Europe.
Who should contribute? Are contributions from outside the EU welcome?
We welcome contributions across all levels. This can be individuals, this can be collaborations, networks, institutions. Contributions can be made from within Europe, but also from all over the world. We welcome all. The scales can vary from an individual project to a whole research programme across a scale of ten years.
What the contributions should do is they should advance research with regard to scientific advancements, technological or clinical applications, and make full use of the tools that we have in the EBRAINS ecosystem. That includes data, tools and models. Your proposals can also include improvements of the EBRAINS infrastructure. There may be gaps, for instance, tools that we are missing in the EBRAINS infrastructure. Their identification will help us to guide prioritization and improve the infrastructure, making this part of the technical implementation plan for the next ten years.
Is there a budget associated with the call?
There is no budget directly associated with this call, but the contributions will help us to build the Roadmap for the next ten years. Of course, the Roadmap will be very carefully considered by funders for all prioritisation of future neuroscience research and for upcoming calls.
When is the deadline for submission? What are the next steps?
The deadline for submission is the 1st of March 2026. After this deadline we will perform a very light review of the contributions. All accepted contributions will be published in a form that still needs to be defined - very likely in electronic form.
All the contributions will be analysed and we will use the analysis to build an agenda for a subsequent two day strategy symposium that we will hold sometime in late spring in the same year, 2026. The location still needs to be determined. During the strategy symposium we will debate the contributions and translate the contributions and the discussions into a Roadmap defining the implementation and prioritisation strategy of EBRAINS for the next ten years.
We're looking forward to your contributions. I am looking forward to reading them. See you soon at the debates of the strategy symposium for the EBRAINS 10-Year Roadmap.
